Looking for the intelligent folks who have done what seems to me to be the impossible, Living as an Expat. I want to learn and discuss the pros and cons of this process and final outcome...
So if you have any experience, write in!

Re: How to get moving and get out leagally?!
Wed, November 17, 2004 - 5:37 AMWell, I've been an expat for over 10 years. The first 7, I actually had LEGAL residency for two ;) (as in, I worked on a Tourist visa for 5). Even though I was married to a Taiwan national at the time, the process of getting residency at the time was very difficult. I went back to the U.S. for a while and returned about 3 years ago. The visa regulations had changed, and I now have permanent residency.
At this point, my personal preference is to end up permanently in (in order of preference) Spain, New Zealand, or Canada. The exact mechanics of HOW to do that will take me another 10 years to figure out, lol.
An expat is someone who lives permanently in another country, but retains original citizenship (and I'm tired, so the "logic" in this post is backward :-D).

Re: How to get moving and get out leagally?!
Sun, November 7, 2004 - 10:01 PMI have lived and worked in a few countries both legally and not. If you are 30 and under you can gain a work vias through programs like BUNAC (unsure of spelling).
Most countries want you to have a job willing to sponser you before they give employment passes. However where there is a will, there is a way. Working illegal does have its advantages...
I loved and hated being an expat. I moved back to the US earlier this year and have had a hard time adjusting. There are books that profile expats (ie emotional high for 2-5 months, etc.) and if you have children there is info on 'third culture children'.
Lastly don't forget that you are American and many people will outwardly be hostile towards you especially if you live outside their ideal (single woman or mom, religion, make more $ than men, etc). Every chance they get they tell how shit America and Americans are and after awhile it does grate on the nerves. Personally I put my best foot forward or said I was from another country.
This is just some food for thought.

Re: How to get moving and get out leagally?!
Wed, November 17, 2004 - 5:40 AMWell, in Asia, it isn't bad. I live in the boondocks of Taiwan and yes, there are people who see a successful business run by a foreigner and will try some schenanigans. My solution is to go to some of my underworld connections for approval of getting a Triad tattoo down my arm (after declining their offers to "help.") So far, it looks good. I get an exquisite dragon tattoo out of the deal (free of charge) and get some of the local dimwits cowed into civility :-D (and the percentage of dimwits, even here in the boonies, is relatively small, but the few can make life miserable).

Tue, December 14, 2004 - 5:38 PMI feel ya SPIN I am bringing all my shit back to Nebraska where my family is, from Santa Barbara, just to get rid of all the stuff I have built up for so long. Its like you get trapped in the house, car payment, job, friends, ect. It makes it difficult to make it all come to an end all at once. P.S. I met you in Santa Barbara a few weekends ago.

Wed, May 11, 2005 - 4:16 PMI am not sure if this is OT, but here goes:
Australians will be able to work and live more easily in the United States after major changes to immigration law approved by the US Congress today.
The US Government has voted to create a new visa called the E3 specifically to allow Australians to live and work in America for up to two years.

Re: How to get moving and get out leagally?!
Sat, July 2, 2005 - 8:42 PMI've been living abroad for almost 5 years now (note time proximity to first Bush election) in Prague, Czech Republic primarily, and though I own a business AND have a full sleeve dragon tattoo, I didn't get it to scare anyone or appear like i'm part of the triad, It's just pretty.
I've lived in a lot of places and the more places I live the more I realize that living somewhere is little more than a question of being there. I would encourage ANYONE (especially Americans) to step outside of the world they were raised in and look around a bit.
Most people will make it out to be such a task requiring forethought and money and planning and all that but moving to a foreign country requires little more than going there. If you have enough money to move to the town next to you, you probably have more than enough to move to most places in the world especially if you choose a place that has a reasonable economy (obviously moving to London or Paris would be much the same financially as trying to relocate to New York or San Francisco).
Get a Job. Find a place to live. Those are the same the world over for the most part. Jobs that are available for especially English language speakers in much of the world are fairly plentiful, and visa requirements are just something to be dealt with as it comes. I started a business in the most statistically difficult country to start a business in in all of Europe, and I did it by the seat of my pants.
If you're a halfway intelligent person, you have SOME form of viable skills (most places just speaking english is a viable occupational skill....The number of teaching jobs in some places is astronomical) then you'll be fine if your on your own. I have a child here now and if I should decide to move somewhere else I couldn't do it as simply these days, but for a single person (or well suited couple) it is a breeze.
Come on out. No need to hide. The waters fine.

Re: How to get moving and get out leagally?!
Sun, July 9, 2006 - 3:33 AMyep - i agree, you just have to go ahead and make it happen.
sure, depending on how / where you plan on going it may take some saving -- my partner and i saved for a few years and now we run our own business in Amsterdam - granted, we're still just 9 months into it - but so far it's been a great experience.
